Dull Skin and Rough Texture: Causes and Treatments
When your skin looks tired no matter how carefully you treat it, the reason often lies beneath the surface, in the layer that gives skin its strength and light.
Dull skin and rough texture usually reflect slower cell renewal, dehydration, sun damage and thinning collagen in the dermis. Daily sun protection and skin care are the foundation. In-clinic treatments such as Rejuran, which supports skin repair, and Juvelook, a collagen stimulator, can gradually improve texture, firmness and radiance over a course of sessions.

What causes dull skin and rough texture?
Dull skin lacks the soft glow of healthy, well-hydrated skin. It may look gray, flat or tired, even with makeup. Rough texture shows as uneven surface, enlarged pores, fine crepey lines or small bumps, and it catches light unevenly, which adds to the dull impression. Many people notice these changes in their thirties and beyond, or after periods of stress, poor sleep, travel or sun exposure.
Dullness and rough texture are among the most common skin concerns, and among the most frustrating, because products that promise radiance often deliver only a temporary change. That is because the underlying causes lie partly in the deeper layers of the skin, which topical products reach only to a limited degree.
The anatomy of radiant skin
Skin has two main layers. The outer layer, the epidermis, constantly renews itself: new cells form at its base and gradually move to the surface, where they are shed. When this renewal slows, as it does with age, dead cells accumulate, making the surface rougher and less reflective. Hydration also matters; well-hydrated skin reflects light evenly, while dehydrated skin looks flat.
Beneath lies the dermis, rich in collagen, which gives skin its strength, and elastin, which gives it spring, supported by a gel of water-binding molecules, including hyaluronic acid. With age and sun exposure, collagen production declines and existing collagen is damaged. The dermis thins, the surface loses support, pores look larger and fine lines form. Sun damage also creates uneven pigmentation. Healthy, radiant skin depends on both layers working well.
How your skin is assessed
Dr. Kim Jun-young, representative surgeon, examines your skin's texture, thickness, pore size, fine lines, hydration and pigmentation, and considers how these relate to underlying volume and structure. He will ask about your skin care routine, sun exposure, sensitivity, and any previous treatments.
He also considers whether some of what looks like dullness is actually shadowing from volume loss or structural change, which skin treatments alone will not resolve. Clarifying this helps set realistic expectations and ensures that treatment is directed at the true cause.
Lifestyle factors are part of the picture too. Sleep, hydration, smoking, alcohol, stress and diet all influence how skin looks from week to week. None of these replaces treatment, and none needs to be flawless, but addressing the ones within your control helps any in-clinic treatment show its full benefit.
Treatment options for dull skin at Will Be
Sun protection and daily skin care
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, gentle cleansing, moisturizing and, where appropriate, active ingredients form the foundation of healthy skin. No clinic treatment replaces this, and it helps protect the benefit of any treatment you choose.
Rejuran
Rejuran is an injectable skin treatment based on polynucleotides, which are thought to support the skin's own repair processes. It is often chosen for improving texture, fine lines and skin resilience, and is typically given as a course of sessions.
Juvelook
Juvelook is a collagen stimulator that encourages the skin to produce new collagen gradually. It is often chosen for firmness, fine lines and enlarged pores, with results developing over weeks to months.
Fat grafting
Where dullness accompanies volume loss, PRP micro fat grafting restores soft volume, and some patients notice their skin looks healthier as well. Its main purpose, however, is volume rather than surface texture.
Rejuran or Juvelook: how to choose
Both treatments work gradually and aim to improve skin quality rather than change facial shape. Rejuran is often chosen when the priority is skin repair, sensitivity and overall texture. Juvelook is often chosen when the priority is firmness, pore appearance and fine lines through collagen stimulation. Some patients benefit from combining or alternating them over time.
Our comparison of Rejuran and Juvelook sets out the differences in detail. Dr. Kim will recommend an approach based on your skin, goals and schedule, and explain how many sessions are likely to be needed.
Patience and consistency
Skin-quality treatments work with the skin's own biology, which renews over weeks and months rather than days. The improvement is typically gradual and builds with a course of treatment. Many patients notice changes in texture and radiance after a few weeks, with further improvement over several months.
This gradual nature is also an advantage. Changes look natural because they come from the skin itself, and there is no sudden shift in appearance. Maintaining results usually involves periodic treatment and, above all, consistent daily sun protection and skin care.
For patients visiting Seoul for a short stay, Dr. Kim can plan the first sessions around your trip and advise on intervals for any continuing care at home. Because skin treatments have little downtime, they are also often combined with other visits to the clinic.
What realistic improvement looks like
For most patients, successful treatment means smoother, more even skin with a healthier glow, finer texture and a softer appearance of pores and fine lines. Makeup often sits better, and skin looks more rested. It does not mean pore-free skin, which is not a realistic or natural goal.
Skin treatments also combine well with other care. Patients who restore facial volume or undergo eyelid or lifting procedures often find that improving skin quality helps the overall result look more cohesive, because well-supported, healthy skin drapes more smoothly over the structures beneath. Dr. Kim can advise on sensible timing if you are planning more than one treatment.
After injectable skin treatments, small bumps, mild redness or bruising at injection points typically settle within a few days. Risks include bruising, swelling, temporary lumps, and, rarely, infection or allergic reaction. Individual results vary, and Dr. Kim will explain what to expect before treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Still wondering about something? Ask Dr. Kim directly — every consultation at Will Be is with the surgeon himself.
Why does my skin look dull even with a good skin care routine?
Topical products work mainly on the surface layer of the skin. Dullness often also reflects changes in the deeper dermis, such as reduced collagen and hydration, as well as sun damage. These deeper changes are harder to reach with products alone. In-clinic skin treatments can complement a good routine by working at that deeper level.
How many sessions of Rejuran or Juvelook will I need?
Both are usually given as a course of several sessions spaced a few weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance. The exact number depends on your skin condition, goals and response. Dr. Kim will recommend a plan after assessing your skin and explain when you are likely to notice change.
Is there downtime after skin booster treatments?
Downtime is usually short. Small bumps at the injection points, mild redness or occasional bruising typically settle within a few days. Many people return to work the next day, using makeup if needed once the skin has settled. Your surgeon will give you specific aftercare instructions.
Can skin treatments shrink my pores?
Skin treatments can improve the appearance of pores by strengthening the surrounding dermis, which helps the pore walls look tighter and the surface smoother. They cannot eliminate pores, which are a normal part of healthy skin. Sun protection and consistent skin care help maintain the improvement.
How long do results last?
Results develop gradually over weeks to months and can last many months, depending on your skin, age, lifestyle and sun exposure. Because the skin continues to age, periodic maintenance treatments are usually recommended. Consistent daily sun protection is one of the most effective ways to preserve the benefit.
