Thread Lift Recovery: Day-by-Day Guide
A thread lift is a smaller step than surgery, but it still asks the face to heal. A little care in the first weeks goes a long way.
Thread lift recovery is usually short: many people return to daily activities within a few days to a week. Mild swelling, tenderness, small dimples and a tight feeling when opening the mouth are common for one to three weeks. Avoiding wide mouth opening, facial massage and pressure while threads anchor supports a smoother result.

What happens under the skin after a thread lift?
Thread lift recovery is shaped by how the threads work. In a thread lift, fine absorbable threads carrying small barbs or cones are passed beneath the skin through tiny entry points. The barbs engage the soft tissue and lift it into a new position. Over the following weeks, the body forms a mild collagen response around each thread, which helps hold the tissue as the thread itself gradually dissolves.
In the early phase, the barbs are the main support. That is why the first two to four weeks matter: large facial movements, pressure or massage can shift tissue before it has anchored. After this period, the face feels more natural and movement is less restricted.
Thread lift recovery timeline
| Time | What is typical | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0–1 | Tightness, mild aching, small marks at entry points. Some swelling. | Cold compresses in short intervals, head elevated, soft foods. |
| Days 2–4 | Swelling and any bruising peak. Small dimples or puckering may appear. | Sleep on your back. Avoid pressing or rubbing the face. |
| Days 5–7 | Swelling falls noticeably. Many return to work and light social plans. | Continue gentle care. Light makeup when entry points have closed and your surgeon agrees. |
| Weeks 2–4 | Tightness when smiling or yawning eases. Dimpling usually softens. | Avoid wide mouth opening, dental treatment, facial massage and strenuous exercise. |
| Months 1–3 | The face feels natural. Collagen response continues as threads dissolve. | Follow-up review of result. |
These are conservative ranges. Individual results vary, and your surgeon will confirm the details for you.
What is normal after a thread lift?
- Tenderness along the thread paths, especially when chewing or yawning.
- Small dimples, ridges or puckering where tissue has gathered, which usually settle within one to three weeks.
- Mild asymmetry of swelling between sides.
- A pulling sensation near the hairline or in front of the ear.
- Faint bruising, particularly in thinner skin.
When should you contact the clinic?
- A thread end that becomes visible, pokes through the skin, or can be felt as a sharp point.
- Increasing pain, warmth, redness or swelling after the first few days, or any discharge, which may suggest infection.
- A dimple or irregularity that is getting worse rather than better after two weeks.
- Marked asymmetry that does not improve as swelling fades.
- Fever.
Most thread-related concerns are straightforward to address when seen early.
What to avoid while threads settle
- Wide mouth opening, including large bites, prolonged yawning and dental procedures, for around two to four weeks. Tell your dentist if a visit is due.
- Facial massage, face rollers, gua sha, and radiofrequency or ultrasound treatments until your surgeon agrees.
- Sleeping on your side or face in the first week or two.
- Saunas, hot baths and strenuous exercise in the first one to two weeks.
- Exaggerated expressions: be gentle with big laughs and grimaces early on.

Notes for international patients
A thread lift suits a short stay better than most procedures. Many international patients plan a few days in Seoul after treatment, so that Dr. Kim Jun-young, representative surgeon, can check early swelling or dimpling before they fly. See how long to stay in Korea.
If you are also considering other treatments on the same trip, ask about timing: some skin treatments should wait until threads have anchored. Our page on combining procedures safely covers the principles. And if you are deciding between approaches, thread lift vs mini facelift sets out the differences honestly.
Preparing for your thread lift
A little preparation shortens recovery. Pause the medications and supplements the clinic advises, since some increase bruising. Avoid alcohol for a few days before and after treatment. Plan soft meals for the first days, and schedule treatment at least two weeks before any important event or photographs.
If a dental check-up is due, arrange it before your thread lift rather than soon after. Bring a scarf or mask for the journey home if you prefer privacy.
Returning to work and daily life
Most people feel ready for office work within a few days. Swelling is usually modest, and small entry-point marks can often be covered with makeup once they have closed. Talking and eating normally are fine, although you may notice tightness with wide smiles or large bites.
Sleep on your back for the first week or two, using a pillow to discourage rolling onto your side. Wash your face gently, patting rather than rubbing, and avoid pulling the skin upward or sideways when applying skincare. By about a month, most restrictions have lifted, and the face feels like your own again.
How long does a thread lift last, and what affects it?
The threads themselves dissolve over months, but the collagen response they leave behind helps support the tissue for some time afterward. How long the lift is noticeable varies with skin thickness, degree of sagging, age, sun exposure, weight changes and lifestyle. Heavier or more lax tissue tends to relax sooner, which is one reason threads suit early to moderate laxity better than advanced sagging.
Healthy habits help the result hold: sun protection, not smoking, stable weight and good sleep. Some patients later combine threads with skin treatments or volume restoration, timed so that each treatment supports rather than disturbs the others.
Keeping expectations realistic
A thread lift gives a gentle, long-lasting-for-its-kind lift rather than the change of a surgical facelift, and the effect gradually softens over time as tissues continue to age. It works well as one tool among several, matched to your skin thickness, degree of laxity and goals. At Will Be, Dr. Kim assesses whether threads are likely to help your face before suggesting them.
Where laxity is more advanced, a surgical approach may give a clearer and longer-lasting change, and an honest assessment will say so. Choosing the right tool at the start is the surest way to a result that looks like you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does thread lift recovery take?
Many people return to daily activities within a few days to a week. Mild swelling, tenderness and small dimples typically settle over one to three weeks. Avoiding wide mouth opening, facial massage and pressure for around two to four weeks helps the threads anchor. The result usually looks settled after one to three months.
Is dimpling after a thread lift normal?
Small dimples, ridges or puckering are common in the first days after a thread lift, where tissue gathers along the barbs. They usually soften within one to three weeks as swelling resolves and tissue redistributes. Contact the clinic if a dimple is getting worse rather than better, or is accompanied by pain.
Can I go to the dentist after a thread lift?
Dental treatment usually involves opening the mouth wide for long periods, which can strain threads before they anchor. It is generally advised to postpone routine dental work for around two to four weeks. If treatment cannot wait, tell your dentist and contact the clinic for advice specific to your case.
When can I have a facial massage after a thread lift?
Facial massage, face rollers, gua sha and energy-based skin treatments are usually avoided for several weeks, because pressure and heat can shift threads or tissue before they are secure. Your surgeon will tell you when these are safe to resume, based on how your healing is progressing.
How soon can I wear makeup after a thread lift?
Light makeup is often possible after a few days, once the tiny entry points have closed. Apply gently, without pulling or rubbing the skin along the thread paths. Keep brushes and sponges clean. Your surgeon will confirm when your skin is ready.
