What Affects the Price of Plastic Surgery?
Behind every quote sit decisions about time, safety and care. Knowing what they are helps you compare clinics with confidence.
The price of plastic surgery depends mainly on the technique, the complexity of your anatomy, whether it is a first or revision operation, the type of anesthesia, any combined procedures, and the aftercare included. A clear quote names each of these. Remote quotes are provisional until the surgeon examines you in person.

Why the price of plastic surgery is rarely a fixed number
The price of plastic surgery reflects an operation designed for one person. Two patients asking for the same procedure by name may need very different surgery, because their anatomy, previous history and goals differ. That is why responsible clinics explain a price only after assessment, and why a figure seen online, without context, tells you little about what you would actually receive.
At Will Be, quotes are given after Dr. Kim Jun-young, representative surgeon, has assessed you and agreed a plan with you. The pricing and quotes page explains this in more detail. The factors below apply broadly across procedures.
Seven factors that shape a quote
- Technique. Some goals can be met with a less invasive method, such as a suture-based natural adhesion double eyelid; others require incision, tissue removal or reconstruction. More involved techniques take longer and need more resources.
- Anatomical complexity. Thick skin, asymmetry, weak supporting structures or unusual anatomy all add steps. In the eyelid, for example, a weak levator (the muscle that raises the lid) may need correction alongside the crease.
- First surgery or revision. Revision means working through scar tissue and often rebuilding lost structure. It is usually more complex and less predictable. See revision eyelid surgery cost for an example.
- Anesthesia. Local anesthesia alone, local with sedation, and general anesthesia each involve different staff, monitoring, equipment and recovery time. Anesthesia options explained covers the differences.
- Combined procedures. Combining operations changes total surgical and anesthesia time. The quote reflects the whole plan rather than a simple sum of separate prices.
- Materials. Implants, specific thread types or devices used in surgery have their own cost.
- Aftercare. Medication, dressings and garments, stitch removal, follow-up visits and remote reviews after you return home.
What a quote should tell you
A good quote is a clear document rather than a single line. It should state:
- Each procedure planned, named specifically.
- The type of anesthesia and who provides and monitors it.
- Any materials, such as implants or threads, and their type.
- Pre-operative tests if needed.
- Medication, garments and dressings.
- Follow-up visits in Seoul and remote follow-up after you leave.
- The clinic's policy if revision is needed, and whether any part is covered.
- What is not included, such as travel, accommodation and personal expenses.
If anything is unclear, ask for it in writing. A clinic that is comfortable explaining its quote is usually comfortable explaining its care.
Why a remote quote is provisional
Online consultations are a practical first step for international patients. Photos and a detailed history allow the surgeon to suggest a plan and a provisional estimate. But some findings can only be made in person: skin thickness, tissue elasticity, muscle strength, the behavior of structures in motion, and health factors that influence anesthesia. For revision, some details are fully known only during surgery.
A provisional quote should therefore be treated as a starting point. Ask the clinic how it handles changes after the in-person examination. At Will Be, any change is explained before surgery, and you remain free to decide. Clear photographs help; see how to take photos for an online consultation.
VAT refund for foreign patients
Korea has at times offered a value-added tax (VAT) refund to eligible foreign patients for certain cosmetic procedures performed at participating clinics. Whether the scheme is in effect on your treatment date, which procedures qualify, and how a refund is claimed can all change. Treat it as a possibility to check, not a figure to plan around, and confirm the current rules with the clinic and official sources before you rely on it. Our page on payment and VAT refund for foreign patients explains the process in general terms.
Red flags: pricing that seems too good
Price alone is not a measure of quality. But certain patterns suggest you should ask more questions:
- A fixed price offered before any assessment of your anatomy.
- Time-limited discounts that pressure you to commit quickly.
- No clear answer about who will perform the surgery, or a consultation with someone other than the surgeon.
- Vague procedure names without detail on technique.
- Anesthesia, follow-up or medication missing from the quote and added later.
- Package deals that bundle procedures you did not ask for.
- Reluctance to discuss risks, revision policy or aftercare from abroad.
Our guide on how to choose a plastic surgeon in Korea explores what to look for beyond price.
Costs that sit outside the quote
For international patients, the clinic's quote is only one part of the total. Flights, accommodation for the full recovery period, local transport, meals and travel insurance all add up. A companion's travel may also be worth planning for, particularly after longer procedures. Some patients underestimate how long they should stay; the guide on how long to stay in Korea gives realistic ranges by procedure.
It is sensible to keep a margin in your budget and a little flexibility in your return date. Recovery does not always follow the calendar exactly, and a few extra days in Seoul are much easier to arrange in advance than at the last minute.
Price and the one-surgeon model
In a one-surgeon clinic, the same doctor consults, designs, operates and follows up. This limits how many operations can be done each day, and that time is part of what a quote reflects. For many patients, knowing exactly who will operate, and being able to ask that person questions throughout recovery, is a meaningful part of the value. It is one consideration among many, and each patient weighs it differently.
Whatever clinic you choose, the principle is the same: understand what you are paying for, and make sure the person who plans your surgery is the person who performs it.

What affects the price of plastic surgery?
The main factors are the technique, the complexity of your anatomy, whether it is a first surgery or a revision, the type of anesthesia, any combined procedures, materials such as implants or threads, and the aftercare included. A clear quote names each element, so you can understand and compare what you would receive.
Why do clinics not publish fixed prices?
Because the same named procedure can involve very different surgery for different people. Anatomy, previous operations and goals change the plan, and with it the time, anesthesia and aftercare required. Many clinics prefer to explain a price after assessment so that it reflects the operation you actually need.
Why is revision surgery usually more expensive?
Revision involves working through scar tissue, identifying altered anatomy and often rebuilding lost structure or volume. It generally takes longer, carries more uncertainty, and needs a longer follow-up period. These factors are reflected in the quote, which is given after a careful in-person examination.
Does combining procedures reduce the total price?
Combining procedures may reduce the number of separate anesthesia sessions and recovery periods, but it also increases surgical time and can lengthen recovery. The quote reflects the total plan. Safety and suitability should guide whether to combine, rather than cost alone.
Why might my quote change after the in-person consultation?
A remote quote is based on photos and history. In person, the surgeon can assess skin thickness, tissue elasticity, muscle strength and health factors that photos cannot show. If these findings differ, the plan may be adjusted. A responsible clinic explains any change before surgery and leaves the decision to you.
Are foreign patients eligible for a VAT refund in Korea?
Korea has at times offered a VAT refund to eligible foreign patients for certain cosmetic procedures at participating clinics. Eligibility rules, qualifying procedures and whether the scheme is active can change. Confirm the current rules with the clinic and official sources before relying on it.
